The average healthcare provider has a duplicate or overlay in 1 out of 12.5 records, which could pose serious consequences in light of the 21st Century Cures Act and ONC Final Rule. Certain data element errors in the master patient index (MPI) such as spelling errors, missing or malformed data are the typical causes of record duplication. Healthcare providers can combat these issues through extensive user training and routine audits, however, these efforts only provide a temporary fix.
